My Flavor of Pop Music

Curated by Connor Eschrich

I've been listening to a lot of female pop artists, which is a bit off-brand for me. I have traditionally liked hip-hop, rap, alternative music OR male pop artists (Biebs, Jesse McCartney). There are two flavors of female pop artists that I like: (1) Artists with a mix of classic soul & jazz (Sienna Spiro, RAYE, Olivia Dean). (2) Artists that break the mold of what it means to be a pop star (Charli XCX, Slayyyter, Chappell Roan, Jessie Murph, Kim Petras). Lately, I've been listening to a lot of the latter. They have edge & write pop songs that aren't copy / paste of a formula. Jessie Murph sampled Gucci Mane's Lemonade & had a Gucci feature on the album. Kim Petras is one of the most famous openly transgender pop stars. Chappell Roan had everyone in the country singing lesbian pop songs. Their music has more depth & complexity, while still being a fucking bop.

This song just got released on Lauren's new album & upon the first listen, I immediately knew this was going to become a hyperfixation song for me.

I've been so wary of Slayyyter & the hype around her... but I get it. I started seeing interviews of her too & I was like "oh she is a real one."

I also get so gay off that tequila

Terrence O'Connor influenced me with this song. He is such a cultural icon... how could you not trust his taste??

I love how controversial this song has been. Clearly meant to be cheeky & open to interpretation. This is her first Charli-esque song since Brat Summer (she had the Wuthering Heights music but that had to be so radically different from brat so there was no comparison). I feel like this finally set her free from the expectations of what she was going to do next. She has nothing to prove now & just gets to create what she wants.

Heard this song before the Chelsea Cutler concert I went to, while we were waiting for her to come on the stage. I Shazam-ed it & then she literally came out & said she started crying right before the show because she heard a song play that reminded her of bittersweet moments. It was this song. & apparently googly eyes helped do some writing on Chelsea's new album. Tgod she said that because when I did Shazam it, I was immediately wary of whether or not this was an AI artist purely because of the name.

The opening line here that says "Not for you, you unwhimsical bitch" is so iconic to me. It immediately got my attention.

I could NOT forget about this one. A queen.
